During my Business Analytics Sciences class we were given a dataset for a superstore and tasked with creating a dashboard. Our stakeholders were executives who wanted to visualize insights between revenue and profit over time, region, and product category.

My analysis derived the following insights

🏬  This Superstore’s customer purchasing habits peaked between November 27 and December 5 with over $1M in sales each day, followed by a valley spanning from January 18 to May 13 where sales were below $500K each day

🏬  Profit and margin are inversely related. As profits have grown, margins have suffered. This begs the questions, “Why?” and “How can we improve margins?”

🏬  The drop in margin as profit increases permeates every category and region in a similar way, which makes the July drop off in profit, and subsequent recovery, more inexplicable. What happens in July to disrupt this business?

Steps taken to complete my analysis

  1. Discovery - Defining the objective of the project, tools needed, and stakeholders
  2. Requirements - Identifying the data needed and agreeing on a time frame of completion
  3. Development - Gathering data needed and creating a cardinality chart to define the relationships between databases

  1. Connecting the data to Tableau
  2. Appropriately combining the databases
  3. Creating multiple visualizations showing the requested information and functionality
  4. Combining visualizations into a dashboard that leverages their interactions with each other in a way that provides something greater than the sum of its parts
  5. User acceptance testing - Working with end users to refine functionality and fix bugs
